| NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION:
|
This dormitory for employees of local business enterprise is situated in a provincial city, Kumamoto, about an hour and half by airplane from Tokyo. Since the women who inhabit the building, live and study here for only the first year of their employment, communal living among 80 people are considered as major design emphasis instead of comfortable, well-equipped private rooms. For instance, providing a large living zone was considered more important than slightly increasing individual living spaces. A spacious common bathroom has been designed to accommodate 4 people, but the communal spaces are as large as possible.
From variations worked out during studies of the relations between private and communal space, we selected the ones in which relations between 2 were closest in terms of physical distance, frame-work, and quality of completed spaces. The working plan called for an almost 1 room arrangement in which each person can feel free to use the entire building as an extension of her own private space.
2 dormitory wings, 4 meters from the ground, are positioned on the site’s long axis. The space between these wings serves as a general living room. There is a terrace on either side of this space. The large 2-level space that includes the living room also houses entrance hall, caretaker’s office, guestrooms, bath, and terraces.
From the communal living space, the inhabitants have the view of the street on the north and receive natural light from from all directions. The client aimed to provide the resident freshman ladies with a direct relationship with their new surroundings, rather than make them feel that they were tied up to the interior of this building named “House of Study”. |

I am the janitor of this Women’s dormitory and live here with employed ladies for three years.
We use this building feeling quite relaxed and pleasant because of its spacious and bright communal area.
In the evening, I find some ladies are chattering at one corner and the others are playing cards at the other corner and also another lady is reading book by herself at the different corner of this communal living space.
Sometimes ladies also use this space aerobic studio.
They are feeling this space as the extension of their private room and this leads them the close relationship. I feel like living here as I do too. |

| JURY COMMENTS: |
| This building possesses light and ethereal quality, showing exquisite and restrained taste. The taut exterior defines a subtly modulated enclosure, with the resident’s common spaces clearly articulated on the interior. The architect has created a sophisticated and stimulating spatial sequence. |
